Instrumental Music Critique

As a musician, you know that it can be a challenge to judge your own progress, even as you spend hours practicing your instrument. You may reach various technical milestones, but you would not have a clear idea of how you might fare in a musical competition or audition. Fortunately, you don’t have to wait for these high-pressure events to arise to perform in front of an instrumental music adjudicator and receive professional critique. Prep My Art offers an opportunity for guitarists, pianists, violinists, and other musicians to submit recordings to be reviewed by a panel of judges.

Benefits of Using an Online Music Feedback Service

Often, musicians only have opportunities to sit in front of judges in high-stakes performances, such as ensemble auditions, regional and state solo competitions, or music school applications. While taking music lessons can point you in the right direction with your practice sessions and yield insight on your skills and strengths, your instructor is still only one point of contact for providing you with feedback.

Musical critique is subjective, so it’s always beneficial to have a varied professional audience hear you perform and provide you with feedback. Our service allows you to hear from three independent adjudicators who are knowledgeable and experienced in their fields.

How is your tone quality? Rhythm? Pitch? Dynamics?
If you are a stringed instrumental player how is your bowing? Chin placement?

If you are a brass player, how is your tonguing, finger action and embouchure?

If you are a woodwind player, how is the placement of your reed? Tone? Tonuge? Breath support?

If you are a percussion player how is your rhythmic discernment? Are you precisely on time? how is your attack to your instrument? Are you in control at all times and focused?

How well do all of you collaborate with singers and pianist? How well do you follow your Conductor? How mindful are you of the other instrumentalist and are you truly able to work as a team to create a beautiful masterpiece that makes the Grandpa in the back row cry at your performance? Here at Prep My Art, we are here to truly help you. We want you to be your best and be prepared well so you can succeed in your goals.

Submitting Your Performance for Instrumental Music Critique

You may submit up to 15 minutes of repertoire, allowing you an opportunity to showcase yourself playing different instruments or in different styles.

Applying Critique to Your Practice Sessions

After you submit your pieces, our judges will review them and provide you with their written critique. Judges do not collaborate or communicate, so each review is unique. Although critique may vary due to differing expertise or stylistic preferences, you will likely find common threads between each writeup, which will show you where to focus most in future practices. This will allow you to feel more confident and well-prepared for those performances that matter most for your musical development.
